Griffith’s dream is more important to him than his life, or rather equivalent. Guts is important for his dream thus its only reasonable to risk his life to protect him. He does indeed think of his men as tools but anyone good at what they do take care of their tools. He’s not mistreating or exploiting anyone any more than they wish to be (though he dances on the line). And that’s all I can say at this point.

yea it was used a lot better in this than its use in earlier episodes where for me it felt more out of place.
