  1. You’re the one who keeps coming back like a hungry dog. If you don’t like what you’re being presented then fuck off and don’t enforce your stupid demands on others content and way of thinking. No one owes you anything!

  2. What an awesome, breathtaking discussion. From Naruto to Demon Slayer, from Naruto to AoT, from Naruto to GoT, and at the end Star Wars. Wooh, it was the most satisfying Naruto discussion for me among all of them thus far. With that being said, I’m with Eric and what he is trying to imply. I feel like Rich and Calvin are being too bitter about the situation here, though I enjoyed listening to their reasonings and Aaron’s too of course. Again, it was so damn good. Thanks a bunch

  3. I’m with Rick on this one personally, it definitely cheapens the death and removes a lot of the stakes.

SPOILERS FOR SHIPPUDEN (In case they read this)

People can’t even argue in favor of future stuff either as they’re doing in the comments, solely because Shippuden does this exact same thing, where it doesn’t actually kill off certain characters, despite the fact that it should definitely do so, or at the very least leave them dead whatsoever. It removes the tension in some cases, there are only two cases where characters die, one of which is probably the most truly impactful arc of the entire series (debatable of course), and the other just comes out of left field and is very sudden. Sure the emotion for saying Pain is there or even during the War Arc, but ultimately, there are no real stakes towards the characters when nobody is ever threatened.

However I can argue the exact same thing for anime like DBZ, where Dragon Balls exist, it’s a common shounen thing, characters don’t usually die unless they’re villains. There is also a macguffin to healing or bringing them back.

  4. I get where the value of death is being cheapened but firstly, this is still Naruto so killing these kids early feels like lost potential. Secondly, Rick said its not a staple of people staying alive in this show but in our literal first arc , we were lead to believe Sasuke was dead and for quite a few episodes, and him living through didn’t decrease my emotional investment in this character.

  5. The thing is, as a group, you decided to make the assumption Neji and Choji were dead, it was not told. And giving flashbacks and character building only to dying characters is an anime trope, that you fell for here and that is generally poor writing in my opinion. The power of Naruto is to make you relate to the side characters and give them arc and fights and character building even if they don’t die.

Rick, you are complaining here but we know you like One Piece, How many meaningful characters die in One Piece, I don’t want to spoil anyone but you know the answer and the number is low. Naruto is a shonen so Yes, ninjas on the good side don’t die much, above all in the young generation. But there are heart breaking moments in the show, later on. You may be even more surprised by them in the future if you are disappointed here.

But focusing on the surviving of the genins, make you miss the point. This whole mission failed and Sasuke left. IT is not a happy ending to the NAruto show and it is already a transgression in itself.

  6. You guys have to watch episodes 119 and 120 before episode one of shippuden. This took place after the naruto vs sasuke battle in the manga, but took place hundreds of episodes into shippuden. It’s canon and it one of my personal favorites. Keep up the good work

  7. I feel like Rick’s reactions sometimes are overly negative. Saying he’s done with the show is absurdly over-reacting, especially when there are a solid number of characters who have died in the show so far, and they act as if Death=Stakes, when Sasuke and Naruto both survived their fights, and the stakes were still VERY high, enough that it’s easy to be invested. I think Rick sees shows as series of tropes, while Eric is much more immersed in the story itself.

Also, how in the world were they thinking Choji would be hard to find? The fight against Jirobu left like… A several hundred meter wide clearing. If they missed that, those Medical Ninja should be demoted.

  8. This reaction really bummed me out, it seems like such a silly thing to get stuck on. saying “I’m done with the show” is just so harsh and honestly gives off vibes of someone throwing a temper tantrum (this is their reaction so of course they are entitled to have their opinions and i’d rather they give them honestly than not give them at all) I’m just saying it was an oddly aggressive and immature stance towards something almost all anime shows do. really hope this isn’t a trend going into Shippuden reactions.

  9. I don’t think the conversation with Shikamaru’s dad was meant to come off the way it did. I interpreted it as his dad just using his son’s own views against him to teach him something. Don’t think his dad really believes the whole “are you gonna let a girl talk to you that way,” he just user it to get Shikamaru to listen.

  10. If Rick had just said “I don’t like that they survived, it diminishes the stakes”, I think most people would have agreed.

Taking an absolutist view and declaring that Naruto is dead because of this is a bit strong, and it just makes ppl point out contradictions of liking many other shows where the same thing occurs.

  11. **Spoiler** I honestly feel like they should have left Choji and Neji dead simply because they really don’t do too much down the line. Anything their characters do in shippuden in a narrative sense could have been accomplished by using other characters of the already underutilized cast. They’re characters would have served the story better by them staying dead here and providing motivation and contention down the line. This by extension would have allowed other characters that are underutilized to get more screen time as well.

  12. Come on Rick, you talking about no stakes in hero but you seem to be fine with one piece. Episode over 1000 & all the main crew from the beginning is still there

  13. i totally agree that it’s a fake out that the team didn’t die but just cause of that moment doesn’t mean you have to drop reactions for naruto ( Rick ) although I know he might be disappointed cause there are moments like that in naruto shippuden not gonna specify what moments and what characters that it happen to cause obviously spoilers but naruto shippuden animation and it’s fights and the story only gets better and it’s still enjoyable to react to even with all it’s faults I believe it’s way 10100101010x better then naruto og a lot of people will disagree but honestly I think it’s the truth , in terms of better episodes and a lot of good arcs and amazing moments naruto shippuden definitely has way more then the og like by a lot so I respect your opinions but just saying naruto shippuden is something you wouldn’t wanna miss !!

  14. THE SOUND 4 FOUGHT LEAF JONIN BEFORE SHIKAMARUS SQUAD, those jonin were found by leaf medical ninjas. It is very easy to believe naruto and friends were saved in time. Also theres a monkey that turn into a power pole n were all fine with that…

  15. I agree with the other 3 about Neji and Chouji fake deaths. It was a cheap move and reduces the impact of the entire arc. The worst part is Kishimoto didn’t even redeem them in Shippuden. It’s not like the brought them back to gave them an amazing scene in Part 2. Basically all genins in Shippuden get shafted except Team 7 and Shikamaru. Rick really will hate the end of the first arc of Shippuden.

  16. Have they mentioned if they’re skipping the filler? Most of the arcs are pretty dull unfortunately, so I’ll wait for shippuden if they’re going to slog through that.

Agree that choji and neji surviving kind of mutes the punch of this arc.

  17. I feel like I saw this reaction coming, but also expecting them to be like, “Yay, they’re alive!” I honestly can’t remember how I felt when I first saw this, but it clearly didn’t leave a lasting impression like it did for them lol. When I saw them “die” this time, I did look up to see if Kishimoto intended for them to stay dead.

  18. Man everyone forgets the proctor of the chunin exams who got murdered by the sand village ninja and the countless other deaths during the leaf invasion arc…main characters usually have that plot armor….there are a ton of shows and anime where side characters are seemingly dead usually survive or come back eventually

  19. I haven’t watched their reaction yet but the comments are heavily focused on the two secondary characters that didn’t actually die. I hope that of all things isn’t what decides whether they’ll continue the series.

Sasuke didn’t die in the Zabuza arc. Were they offended then? Naruto didn’t die in the Tsunade arc. Were they offended then? They didn’t put any weight in a major character maybe dying, but they’re offended by a secondary character living? That’s odd. Very odd.

    1. Your main character surviving is a given in any show so its easier to look past it. But with secondary characters you can take more risks since they arent mandatory to the rest of your story. Also when a charater’s death is played up strongly then they are revealed to have survived it feels quite manipulative.

  20. Why are the comments here so controversial lmao. I see people in the comments here saying dumb crap like “well you watch other shows where they don’t kill anyone and you’re fine with them” yeah no shit because they don’t pretend to kill people lol. It was BS that they basically SHOWED them all dying and then went “nah nvm” lol.

  21. Choji and Neji surviving this arc has annoyed me since I watched it when it originally ran. It’s cheap and it just feels unplanned. It’s like having your cake and eating it too. You have all the emotional payoff of a a character sacrificing himself and then half a year later they’re just back because something happened off-screen. And they do the exact same thing in shippuden a bunch of times and it really sours the show for me. I mean I love shippuden and I hope all 4 of them continue watching but this killing off characters and then undoing it business just sucks.

  22. I’ve definitely watched a show or played a game where there was a character death or sacrifice that no matter how hard I tried I could not feel the loss that I should have because it felt like they were gonna come back, even when I was wrong. It’s a logically way to critique the show in this way and it would be silly to think that none of them would have this thought. I think it also shines a light on the fact that this show’s demographic was children. They knew they could say someone lived when it seemed like it would make more sense that they should have died and kid’s would still be just as invested the next time that character was about to “die”.
Shippuden does a better job of maturing it’s writing and adding appropriate stakes for death. Im interested to see how Rick’s ninja way, “This character will be saved” holds up 🙂

  23. I kind of agree with Rick tbh….

I’m not saying much as I don’t want to spoil anything for those who may have not seen Shippuden, but there is a moment where you’re led to believe a character has just been killed and I remember the PAIN I felt when I saw this the first time, only for the following episode to be like nah they good.
I remember being so done with it because the way it was animated and shown to us as the viewers (along with a certain characters reaction to this moment) really made it seem like this particular character had died.

  24. naruto just returned with kakashi after choji and neji were saved implying choji and neji had been brought back much earlier and those medical ninja who caught up with kakashi were on the way to find naruto and sasuke but kakashi beat them to it. their medical corp ninja so their specialty isnt combat nor speed necessarily. and u must remember tsunade’s aide who was healing neji was with another group that ran into the sound ninja four before naruto’s group caught up with them. two of the jonin were hospitalized and warned tsunade that these guys were strong, thats the moment tsunade most likely sent out the medical corp to search around the area where they encountered them. they found choji first and transported him back while others searched for more possible injured allies and found neji, then they brought him quickly back to the village and continued their search. this whole when did the medical ninjas get sent out is easily explained. they never said they found everyone at the same time and choji and neji just managed to survive that long they could have been found shortly after their battles before the sand ninja even intervened to help kiba, shikamaru, and lee.

  25. I can see why Rick think having Choji and Neji cheapen the stakes, but saying not having investment because there is no death is ridiculous. I mean there many shows, anime, movie and comics has character dying and they just comes back alive. I love Dragonball and Dragonball Z for having amazing characters, although the characters keep dying and coming back.

  26. the attack on titan examle by Eric is 100% accurate they even gave a flashback ep of Miakasa as she will be the main character and she said the the end of the ep Eren as long as you alive she has someone to fight for and they just let Eren not exist for 3 eps and no one complain, for Rick he has to type of shows either its a S tier or E Tier so i can understand him either like it so much or hated so much but Aaron and Calvin i didn’t expect the show didn’t confirm thier death how are you in shock i don’t get

  27. I compleatly agree it was cheap how they showed that Neji and Choji basicly died given how they showed it and then went back behind the scenes and “at the end” of the season everyone is fine… So it definately sets you up in future to be more critical about someone actually dying… but to go and say that you dont care about anything anymore is kinda over the top…

    1. Especially since it’s not as if they get used for anything important later down the line. They should have been allowed to go out in a cool way in this arc instead of lingering on pointlessly.

  28. Eric once again the only one with credible thinking. It’s their opinion but considering they rate highly of shows like My hero Academia where not a single character other then all for one has died makes their opinion hypocritical. Same with Avatar. Just cause Aang gets revived by spirit water doesn’t lessen the stakes that’s ridiculous, however that’s what ricks implying. And of course we all know Shippuden has some of the most emotional deaths in anime so Ricks point is inherently false, but still.

    1. Well you are also seeing things from a retrospective with knowledge of future events. And they are hypothesizing. And honestly some characters actual deaths are portrayed far worse later down the line. Choji’s supposed death here was so satisfying I was annoyed when he was alive.

    2. Only that guy that can see the future died.

And Rick is a big One Piece fan. Where like 2 characters that aren’t in flashbacks have died. And there have been so many fake out deaths in OP, up to where Rick says he is in that story.

I can think of at least 10 at the top of my head.

The time skip allowed Kishi to kill more. Yes not a lot of them are the kid characters, but a lot of them are good, fan favorite characters.

  29. I see what they’re saying. As far as what Rick is saying, their experience is different from ours since we all watched in our teens. Them watching as adults, stuff like this is more impactful.. the creators literally pulled an avatar Airbender jet type death scenario. Because it almost seemed as if the people on top didn’t agree with those main side characters dying. So it was reversed.. however knowing what I know in shippuden.. that’s just something you have to accept for part 1 naruto

    1. this is something people dont get about shonnen jump, the editors are king, and they are the ones to say who can or cannot die, never forget about dbz and the cell saga. that was supposed to go completely diferent, but the editor didnt want marcel marceau and a stick of bones to be the big threat… he didnt even forced 17 & 18 to become food because their designs was still not good enough for the big villain of the arc.

it happens alot, and im sure naruto was just another casualty.

  30. They definitely wanted you to believe Choji and Neji were dead to the point that they aren’t added to the opening until after this episode.

  31. The reason shikamaru dad said that too him was because that’s shikamarus personality and he was trying to egg him on, that’s apart of shikamarus character growth, its like sokka in avatar

  32. “It’s like he was going to kill these characters and the publisher said, you can’t kill these characters.”
    -Rick Martin

It’s almost like the mangaka decided to do a time jump to age up the characters so he could start killing them under the umbrella of a more mature manga title that didn’t feature a little boy protagonist on the cover.

  33. You watch tons of anime where no one dies, gon got his life and nen back after “sacrificing it” why did you expect naruto to kill off its entire cast when there are literally hundreds of eps to go in shippuden

  34. every super hero show is the exact same way about people almost dying constantly but living seemingly impossible situations. and when they do die they just come back so i dont understand how you feel stakes in those shows but not here

      1. Yes and no. There are lots of deaths that are like this. But the idea of coming back to life isn’t new. We were literally shown the Edo tensei dozens of episodes ago

    1. It isn’t ridiculous in the slightest, he is completely right. The stakes in Naruto are ridiculously low and they pretty much stay that way until the final arc where some sacrifices are made but still not even 90% of what could and should have happened in a global war.
