The expression “Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth” comes from the practice of checking a horse’s age and health by checking it’s teeth. This is what people would do when buying a horse since there are tricks an unscrupulous seller can use to make the horse temporarily look younger and healthier (and therefore more expensive) than it normally would. However, if the horse is a gift, then it is consided rude to check it’s teeth, as questioning a fortunate event displays ingratitude.
